The 2024-25 season is underway for the WHS girls basketball team. Head Coach Jason VenJohn has 24 girls on the roster as he embarks on his 13th season.

Five key returners will lead the Lady Vikings this season. Guards Leyla Harris, Brooklynn Mortimer, and Rhyanna Richert will join posts Cerenity Jones and Addie Flaton as team leaders.

Most of VenJohn’s returners saw most of their playing time in sub-varsity competition last season, and will have to adjust quickly to the bright lights of the varsity court.

“We have a very inexperienced and young team when it comes to varsity minutes,” VenJohn said. “We’re just going to take each game, day by day. We have amazing senior leadership this year and high energy.”

The seniors on the team are excited about what the future will bring. They are hopeful for a better outcome compared to past seasons and expect better teamwork and more positive outcomes.

“We’ve had major steps in growth even before games have started,” Richert stated.

VenJohn’s mantra for the team is straightforward.

“You’re either in or you’re out,” Venjohn said.

The Lady Vikings will play five games before the holiday break. Their first game after the break is January 7 when they host Mulvane.
