The Winfield High School Boys Swim team kicked off its 2024-2025 season. Jay Buffum, a former assistant coach, took over the position as head coach this season, with the assistance of Chris Conover. The returning seniors are Brandon Kendall, Lev Mitin, Kale Jewers, and Rome Hunt.
“I am most excited about league and state this year,” Kendall said. “I am excited to see how fast we can push ourselves at state, hopefully setting new records, and potentially winning another league title.”
Last season, Jewers and Kendall, along with juniors Parker Mah and Corden Cuington, broke the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1.45.59. Those four have all returned this season and are ready to lead the team to new heights.
Buffum is expecting a lot because of the school records.
“Expectations are high,” Buffum said. “We are really excited for good things from this season. Having all of the swimmers back puts us in a really good competitive position to do some good things” Buffum said.
The team had its first swim meet on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Newton High School, and took second place. They will host this season’s only home meet on Thursday January 9, 2025 at the Southwestern College Pool.
“I am most excited for the 100 back, because it is one of my top strokes. My favorite thing about swimming is cutting time and eating with the guys afterwards” said Mitin.
