The Winfield High School Girls Wrestling team started its season on November 18th, 2024. Andrew Brenn is starting his 22nd year as a wrestling coach, and his fourth year as head coach of the girls’ team. Maria Rios Jean will join him as an assistant coach this season.
Senior Cora Moon and junior Abby Brenn will use their experiences as state qualifiers to lead the team this season. Brenn finished her 2023-24 season as the 4-1A State Runner-up at 190 lbs.
“It is nice knowing I can help be a standard for the team and help other wrestlers see that hard work does pay off in the long run.” Abby Brenn said.
Moon hopes to create a family atmosphere for this year’s team.
“Being a key returner to the girls team means that I’ve been able to make the team welcoming and fun, like a family, as [much as] I can,” Moon said.
While expectations of state hardware can occupy coaches’ minds, building the team for the future is equally important.
“Wrestling is not only an individual sport, but also a team sport. The name of the game for girls wrestling is recruit, recruit, recruit” Coach Brenn said.
The team will wrestle at home twice this season, including a dual with Buhler on December 17, and a triangular with Circle and Mulvane on January 23.
