Winfield High School students presented the award-winning musical three times in three days.

For the first time ever, the WHS Viking Theatre Department presented Legally Blonde: The Musical on November 22-24, 2024 in the WHS Auditorium. The production team included actors, actresses, stagehands, lights team, and the band, who all worked hard to assemble the play.

Due to a limited amount of actors and actresses, cast members varied in the number of roles they played. Because of this, the members had differing experiences while working in the play. Kat Dutton, a junior, played numerous rules in the production.

“I played about 5 different roles: Winthorpe, a Harvard student, Dewey, a Prison Guard, and a Lawyer,” Dutton said. “My biggest challenge between roles was probably quick changes and trying to figure out when to put on extra foundation, or just trying to take all [the makeup] off in time. It’s definitely a lot on me, but I love it.”

Kaylynn Peppers, a senior, played a major role in the play.

“I am playing Margo, one of the Delta Nu’s,” Peppers said.

The character Margo often appears alongside the main character, Elle Woods. Due to this amount of screen time, Peppers continued to say that the hardest part of her role was “Remembering my lines.”

A power outage during the crew’s final week of rehearsals added some unexpected challenges.

“The biggest challenge was getting the cast [back] together for blocking,” spot runner Rhyanna Richert said. Blocking in theatre is moving to the location and movement that the actors make on stage.

The power problems also cut rehearsal time on the week of production.

Board runner Laura Dutton said that the time cut was challenging.

“They had less time than other productions they put on, and [this one’s] the most successful one.”

Despite all the challenges that occurred during production, the production team’s efforts paid off in the end. More than 550 audience members watched the musical over three shows.
