Rhonda Hockenbury was approved as the next Winfield High School Principal, on February 10, 2025. Hockenbury brings 27 years of education experience to Winfield, after serving the last eight years as an administrator in the McLoud Public School district in Oklahoma.
Hockenbury does not plan on making big changes right away.
“I think I will need to spend some time observing and getting to know staff and students before solidifying long-term goals,” she remarked. “However, I certainly plan to work with staff to tackle attendance, academic performance, and continuous growth in several areas.”
Hockenbury hopes to build on the foundation already established by previous administrators.
“I believe the current administration has laid the foundation for improvement at WHS,” she stated. “My hope is to build upon some of their ideas and initiatives. I will also be working with staff to create a building site plan which will help us to focus our efforts in the key areas of relationships, instruction, curriculum, and assessment.”
Hockenbury graduated from Southwestern College in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She has taught in three different school systems in the nearly three decades since then.
In 2006, Hockenbury received the Outstanding Educator award and was the head softball coach at Wilson High School in Wilson, Oklahoma, leading the team to the state championship in 2003.
Hockenbury also understands the role that school spirit plays in a high school setting.
“As a former college athlete and coach, I think school spirit and pride in one’s school are extremely important. I will work with students, staff, and the community to increase school spirit.”
Hockenbury is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as she begins her new journey as Winfield High School’s new principal.
“I absolutely love school and am always excited for a new school year as it brings many opportunities for challenge and growth,” Hockenbury exclaimed. “I look forward to being part of the Viking family.”
Beyond her professional commitments, Hockenbury finds balance in life through her hobbies.
“I enjoy spending time with family, reading, watching most sports, photography, and working out,” she said.
With a heart ready to inspire, educate, and lead, Hockenbury embodies the spirit of the Viking family, ready to take on the challenges of the new academic year with enthusiasm and determination.
