The annual Coach Shaw Memorial Blood Drive will be held at Winfield High School on Nov. 7th, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym.
“Coach Brian Shaw was a teacher and tennis coach at Winfield High School,” Kirkland said, “He ended up dying from cancer. He used to teach Health Science Careers before I took over.”
This is a personal endeavor for Kirkand, as he is a part of how this blood drive came to be.
“Rob Fields, who is the founder of the HOSA program at WHS, went to talk to Shaw’s family and got their permission to name it after him,” Kirkland explains.
Donating blood is a simple act that has the potential to save lives.
“Every two seconds, somebody in the U.S. needs blood,” Kirkland says, “Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets, or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation.”
Those interested in donating blood can sign up in Kirkland’s room, 231
“16-year-olds have to get a permission slip signed by a guardian to sign up,” Kirkland said, “Everyone else can sign up by scanning the QR codes on the posters or come talk to me, and I will get anyone who wants to sign up.”
