Prom is a traditional event that everyone looks forward to every year. Prom ranges from the feeling of trying on new dresses, deciding what vehicle you want to arrive in, and the activities that take place afterwards. Many exciting and happy things come with prom, but not without its share of concerns as well.
Junior Zlata Mitina voiced a common concern about the planning committee’s lack of student involvement. “I’ve heard people complaining, and I’d stand with that myself—I wish there were more student body input—not just the committee,” she stated.
Many students feel that their opinions and preferences are not adequately represented, leading to apprehensions about the overall experience.Concerns extend beyond just the planning process. Students have expressed worries about the logistics of the event and the overall atmosphere.
Kaden Van De Grift, also a junior, recalled last year’s prom, saying, “The dance floor was small last year,” highlighting space constraints that may impact everyone’s enjoyment.
Maddox Lazelle echoed concerns regarding the weather, sharing, “Probably the weather, because last year it was SO COLD.” Given the unpredictability of spring weather, students are hoping for a more favorable climate this year.
Meanwhile, Jaylin Hansana expressed anxiety about the overall ambiance of the evening, stating, “I’m concerned about the vibes.”
Creating a fun and enjoyable atmosphere is crucial for many, and students like Naeroby Camacho are focused on making sure everyone feels included. “Prom plans like what we’re going to eat for lunch, what time we’re going to get ready, and trying to please everyone in the friend group is challenging. We just want to do something that everyone enjoys,” Camacho explained.
As the Winfield High School prom approaches, it’s clear that while students are excited about the event, they are also eager for a more collaborative approach to planning that ensures everyone’s voice is heard. With the right adjustments, this year’s prom could be one to remember for all the right reasons.
